A Kiss From Oliver
Around Valentine’s Day, we shared with you the story of Oliver and his mama. Oliver was born with Down Syndrome and congenital heart disease in 2016. Although his family was thrilled with their new son, they were scared to see that his lips were often blue.
Oliver suffered from breathing distress, frequent fevers and coughing. His mama knew something needed to be done to help her precious boy, and she took him to several hospitals desperately searching for help, only to be repeatedly turned away. Thanks to supporters of our Unity Initiative, we were able to promise Oliver’s mama that her son would get the best care possible at Children’s Hospital of Fudan University.
Oliver’s heart surgery was quite risky, but doctors felt it was a success. Following surgery, however, Oliver struggled to come off the ventilator and spent many weeks in the ICU while his mother worriedly kept watch. She was not allowed to be with him for more than 10 minutes a day.
There were times when we worried that Oliver was not going to have the strength to breathe on his own. Then, at last, he rallied. With his mama by his side, he tolerated the removal of the ventilator and has since made incredible strides.
Oliver’s family wishes to express their deepest gratitude to everyone who made their beloved son’s surgery possible.
As for Oliver, he is blowing a big kiss to everyone who helped him!
We are overjoyed to announce that Oliver and his parents were discharged from the hospital today.
To everyone who supported this beautiful little boy, we send our deepest thanks. We can’t think of anything more wonderful than knowing Oliver’s heart is now healed and that this caring and devoted family remain united.
