Seamus’ Smile

“Although he cannot see, he uses his heart to see the world.”

These beautiful words were written by the monitor at LWB’s Loudi foster care home where two and a half-year-old Seamus lives.  Seamus was born prematurely and without eyeballs.  It was later discovered that he has a significant hearing loss in one of his ears.  Despite these challenges, Seamus just exudes pure joy.  He is small in stature but delights whomever he encounters.  Our monitor describes him as a lovely, joyful, and obedient little boy. Seamus’ file is currently available on the shared list, and we look forward to some very special family finding this very special boy and calling him their own.  Now THAT is worth smiling about!

Our Newest Qiandongnan Kids!

Yesterday we showed off some of the gorgeous children in our newest foster care program in Qiandongnan, Guizhou province.  Thanks to all of our wonderful sponsors, this program is off to a great start and we are ready to expand!  We have been asked to take an additional eight children into the program, so the search for foster families is on. Each of these children will require three sponsors to support them in foster care.  As was previously done with this program, it is our wish that the first sponsor to sign up to support each child choose the English name of the child.

The following children have been allocated a program number to identify them for sponsorship until a sponsor steps forward and gives them a new English name.

New Toys and Togs for Our Newest Foster Care Program

In April, we announced the opening of our newest foster care program in Qiandongnan. The program opened with ten children, and we have added two more children in the past few weeks. The children are adjusting very well to their new lives with their foster families, and it has been wonderful to see their initial progress. We loved these photos so much that we wanted to share them with our readers!

Keeping Up With Danny

In a group of photos recently taken at Dingxi, we spotted our darling Danny modeling his festive red jacket, hanging out with the babies and peering at a friend’s new wheelchair. It reminded us that Danny is still waiting for a family to bring him home, and we wanted to share these cute photos and update our readers on his progress.

Kenny: LWB’s Featured Child of the Week

Little Kenny is the newest recruit in our Xiangtan foster care program. In April he underwent surgery for a serious heart defect. He had a very large ventricular septal defect (VSD), as well as pulmonary hypertension (PH). The PH had resulted in the VSD causing abnormally high blood pressure in the arteries of the lungs, making the right side of Kenny’s heart work much harder than normal. Kenny needed surgery as quickly as possible to avoid possible congestive heart failure and was moved to one of the best cardiac hospitals in Shanghai.

Gena’s In Charge!

Last fall we ran a blog about a darling four-year-old named Gena from our Zhaotong foster care program. Gena was born with no eyes, and her eyelids are fused shut. However, this seems to have intesified Gena’s determination to become independent and to make her opinions known. Our foster care manager reports that Gena is becoming more and more confident and can even be, well, a little bossy! She recognizes each of the family member’s cell phone ring tones.  When she hears a phone ring, she calls out the name of the relevant owner and tells them to answer the phone. When she hears the family meal being prepared, she instructs everyone to take their places at the table. When adults ask one another to do tasks such as clean the floor or help with the food preparation, Gena is always there to repeat the instruction and ensure that everyone does as he or she is told.

Puppy Love for Patrick

It’s difficult to think of anything cuter than a boy and his dog. Our always-smiling Patrick seems pretty thrilled to be holding a cuddly puppy! We actually think that Patrick is the one who looks cuddly.

Lily: LWB’s Featured Child of the Week

Lily is a lovely four-year-old little girl in our Fuyang foster care program. She entered LWB foster care in February 2007 and has had successful repair surgeries on her cleft lip and palate. She loves her life with her foster family and is a very happy little girl. Lily is attending school and loves it! Her teacher reports that she likes to play with her classmates and is a good student. When our foster care manager visited her at school she was so happy to have her friends surrounding her when she had her photo taken. If you ask Lily what her favorite part of the school day is she will tell you the singing and dancing!

Introducing Landon!

This marks Landon’s first appearance on the LWB Community, so we want to make sure he is properly introduced. Landon is four and a half years old and lives in foster care in Hefei, Anhui province. His Chinese name means “outstanding.” Needless to say, we would agree! We chose “Landon” as his English name which can mean “long hill,” a name which seems fitting when you read about his energy and the long hill he has had to climb to be the healthy, lively boy he is today.

Suzy’s Song — Encore!

Last week we shared a blog about a very special girl named Suzy who has a gorgeous, crystal-clear voice. Some readers were not able to view the video of Suzy singing, so we’re running an encore presentation with videos that will hopefully work better this time around.

In fall 2010, we featured lovely twelve-year-old Suzy on our blog in Suzy: Look With the Heart. Suzy is part of our Zhaotong foster care program in Yunnan and attends a boarding school for the blind with her foster brother, who is also completely blind. She has just enjoyed spending the spring holiday home from boarding school with her foster grandmother, with whom she is very close. When her grandmother’s back aches from doing the household chores, Suzy is so kind to her and rubs her back to help her relax.  After meal times, she also tries to help her foster grandmother by straightening up the kitchen. She knows where all of the bowls and kitchen pans belong and can put them all away on her own.
