Three Boys, Three Personalities

In the interest of adoption, LWB Community will be profiling some waiting children whose orphanages have asked for help in finding families for them. However, we do want to be clear that these children are not in LWB programs.

Nancy Williams, an LWB volunteer, recently shared photos with us of three boys with three very different personalities whom she met this past summer. Some assistance projects were done at their orphanage, and we would like to spread the word that these three boys are waiting for families. Here is what Nancy wrote about meeting the boys, whom we have to come to call “The Gaozhou Boys”:

This summer on a homeland tour, we were able to visit Gaozhou SWI.  While there, we met three boys who are on the shared list and got a chance to interact with them a little.  Bryson, at 4 1/2, was the quietest of the three.  He didn’t seem to want to have anything to do with the loud room of visitors, yet seemed to be a favorite of the SWI Director. He was featured on our blog last March in “Bryson’s Debut“.

Remember Bashful Benjie?

Some LWB volunteers traveled to Jinjiang this past February and had a wonderful visit!  They found the teachers were working hard and cared a lot for the children. “Bashful Benjie”, featured in our February 17th blog post, was one of the children they got to meet. While we were introducing Benjie to our readers, our volunteers were meeting him in person.

What they noticed about Benjie was that he has multiple special needs. In addition to a disability of his hands, it turns out that Benjie does in fact have a significant hearing impairment. This explains more about why he was not talking much when we blogged about him.

Zane Takes a Break

The last time we met up with Zane, we imagined that he was hard at work writing a memo to his future family. It seems that they are not responding as quickly as he had hoped, and he is still waiting for them! So while he waits, he’s decided to take a break from work and play for awhile…like the ten-year-old boy that he is.

Zane was once a a boy with unhealthy blue lips and fingers who caught the eyes of one of our medical team in photos taken at his orphanage in Zhejiang. Sponsors from around the world stepped in to fund his heart surgery (see “Zane’s Miracle”), and now he is no longer blue…and has energy to spare!

Henry Hams It Up!

Henry, the Boy from LiShui, continues to smile! We have done two blogs on him in the past (see also “More Smiles from Henry”), and there isn’t a single photo in which he isn’t beaming ear to ear. In these newest photos, we can see that being in front of a camera brings out Henry’s inner ham as he definitely likes to grin and pose! What a winning smile he has.

Shawn Michael: LWB’s Featured Child of the Week

Shawn Michael has been at the Lu’An, Anhui, orphanage for nearly half a year. He has cerebral palsy, doesn’t eat very well, and gets sick easily, but he is a good boy. A few weeks ago it was found that Shawn Michael cried seriously when his right leg was touched. LWB’s Orphanage Assistance program sponsors a nurse in this orphanage to provide medical care to the children there. The nurse thought that Shawn Michael might have a leg fracture or cyst within his leg. He was taken to the hospital for an X-ray of his leg, and it was determined that he has inherited Osteogenesis Imperfecta (OI), or brittle bone disease, and he did have a fracture. With tender care he is doing better now, but Shawn faces an uncertain future since his bones are easily broken.

Timothy, Ready and Waiting!

This sweet smile belongs to Timothy, a young man who was in LWB’s Nutrition program in Deyang, Sichuan Province, in 2007.  Timothy received club foot casting through An Orphan’s Wish in Guilin, using the Ponseti method to gently move his feet into proper position. He arrived in August 2009 and was discharged nearly a year later in July 2010. Timothy also has a diagnosis of arthrogryposis. Currently he is six years old and wears an insole in his shoes. He no longer wears braces except for when he sleeps at night.

Mild Mickey

In the interest of adoption, LWB Community will be profiling some waiting children whose orphanages have asked for help in finding families for them.  However, we do want to be clear that these children are not in LWB programs, and we have no personal knowledge of them.

Mickey is a sweet five-year-old boy from Deyang orphanage in Sichuan province with a mild, easy personality.  He was born with congenital cataracts in both eyes.  As a baby, he received cataract extraction and then had lens implantation surgery in May 2009. Bright lights can bother Mickey, and he will put his hands over his eyes in these situations.

Cheryl: LWB’s Featured Child of the Week

Cheryl at Huainan

Three-year old Cheryl participates in several of our programs. Through our Huainan nutrition program, she received quality infant formula to support proper growth and development. She has moved on to the toddler formula that provides nutrients, such as iron and calcium, necessary for continued development of the brain and bones. Cheryl just began attending LWB’s Believe in Me Huainan School. Although shy and a little timid, Cheryl enjoys going to school with her friends.

Dancing Shane

In the interest of adoption, LWB Community will be profiling some waiting children whose orphanages have asked for help in finding families for them. However, we do want to be clear that these children are not in LWB programs, and we have no personal knowledge of them.

Shane is a darling four-year-old boy from Lishui orphanage in Zhejiang province. His multiple special needs include a deformity of his right ear, rickets, and a right arm deformity. The person who took these photos for us noted how extroverted he is and how much he likes to dance. Apparently, it took some convincing to get him to stop showing off his dance moves so she could get a good photo of him. It sounds like he is a fun-loving little boy!

Elizabeth: LWB’s Featured Child of the Week

We would like to introduce you to Elizabeth, the youngest baby in our Deyang nutrition program. Yes, this cutie is a little girl even though she is wearing blue. Just two months old, Elizabeth weighs 12 pounds and is about 20 inches long. We say about 20 inches as she didn’t want to stretch out her legs for a more accurate measurement!

Elizabeth’s bright eyes and chubby cheeks are due in part to the high quality formula that she receives through our Deyang nutrition program. Every three months we ship formula to the orphanage, and one of our staff in China visits the orphanage to assess the children’s health and developmental progress.

Current donations to this program no longer bring in enough funds to cover the amount of formula we have been sending each quarter. In addition to babies like Elizabeth, toddlers with special needs at the Deyang orphanage also benefit from our formula.
