Every time you smile at someone, it is an action of love, a gift to that person, a beautiful thing. ~ Mother Teresa
From the first time we saw Jonathan, we knew there was something special about him: his smile. When he arrived at LWB’s True Children’s Healing Home (TCHH) in Fujian from his home orphanage in Guizhou Province, Jonathan weighed only 4.6 kg. (10.1 lbs.) and was very tiny and weak. At 11 months old he could not roll over or grab toys. He needed to gain weight and strength to be eligible for cleft lip surgery. Jonathan had one thing on his side, however… he loved when adults talked to him and always rewarded them with his incredible smile.
Jonathan quickly began responding to his name and gave his nanny a big smile whenever she called it. After one month at TCHH Jonathan had not only gained more than .7 kg. (1.5 lbs.), but now he happily played with his nanny, grabbing toys that she offered him. He was so excited when he held a toy that he would kick his legs and, of course, smile from ear to ear.
After two months at TCHH Jonathan had gained 1.3 kg. (3 lbs.)! He was now a safe weight to undergo cleft lip surgery. Jonathan tolerated the surgery very well and had an uneventful recovery. He now had a beautiful new smile but was still small for his age of 14 months and behind on many gross and fine motor milestones, such as being able to push up on his arms while lying on his tummy. Jonathan will have an extended stay at TCHH until he has gained more weight and strength and has caught up on these important milestones. Jonathan has hard work ahead of him, but we just discovered a big motivator for him: Jonathan loves music. Any time he hears music, he sways from side to side and, of course, smiles!
Jonathan is in need of monthly sponsors at $50 per month (or $25 per month for a shared sponsorship) for his extended stay at TCHH. If you would like to be a part of his story of hope and healing, as well as one of the first people to see his beautiful smile every month, please consider becoming a sponsor.
