Lily: LWB’s Featured Child of the Week

Lily is a lovely four-year-old little girl in our Fuyang foster care program. She entered LWB foster care in February 2007 and has had successful repair surgeries on her cleft lip and palate. She loves her life with her foster family and is a very happy little girl. Lily is attending school and loves it! Her teacher reports that she likes to play with her classmates and is a good student. When our foster care manager visited her at school she was so happy to have her friends surrounding her when she had her photo taken. If you ask Lily what her favorite part of the school day is she will tell you the singing and dancing!

Introducing Landon!

This marks Landon’s first appearance on the LWB Community, so we want to make sure he is properly introduced. Landon is four and a half years old and lives in foster care in Hefei, Anhui province. His Chinese name means “outstanding.” Needless to say, we would agree! We chose “Landon” as his English name which can mean “long hill,” a name which seems fitting when you read about his energy and the long hill he has had to climb to be the healthy, lively boy he is today.

Heartfelt Thanks from Corey’s Mother

Last November, a very sick newborn baby boy was found at an Anhui orphanage (“A Baby Alone”). He was born with anal atresia and required immediate surgery to survive. The orphanage called us, and thanks to our generous donors, LWB was able to provide him with this surgery. We gave him the name of Corey, which means “God’s peace.”

During his initial surgery, his birthmother was found and came forward (you can read more about her difficult circumstances on the blog, “An Update on Baby Corey.”) It was with great joy that mother and baby were reunited.

Mark: LWB’s Featured Child of the Week

Mark is a sweet and gentle little boy from our Fuyang foster care program in Anhui.  He joined his foster family in December 2009.  As you can see from these photos, Mark is very close to his foster mother and is content to spend the whole day in her arms although he does like to play with the other children in the neighborhood.  He has a great appetite and loves to eat eggs and noodles.  If he sees anyone eating, he will stare at them until they decide to share with him!

Counting Our Blessings on the Twelve Days of Christmas: Foster Care Love

On the fourth day of Christmas, we are grateful for the hundreds of foster families who work with LWB to provide one-on-one care to orphaned children. We believe that babies do best when raised in a loving family setting, and we have seen absolute transformations occur when children are moved from a crowded institution into their very own family. Recently, our foster care director visited every child in our program in both Henan and Anhui provinces, and she came back to tell us again what child development experts have written many times. Emotionally, kids need to know that they are safe and cared for and that they can trust the people in their lives. That is the goal of our foster care program, to allow orphaned children to have moms and dads and grandparents and siblings – so they can grow up in the warmth of family life. We loved this photo of little Aiden, who is in our Zhang Village program in Anhui, as it clearly shows the bonds that form through foster care.

Lively, Lovely Rachel from Lu’An

“Clever, affectionate and popular.”
“A very good, caring friend.”
“Leader.”
“Devoted big sister.”

These are all words that have been used to describe Rachel, a lively eight-year-old girl in our Lu’An foster care program in Anhui Province. Rachel is an open and friendly girl who loves dancing and has often taken on the role of tutor to her friends at school. Rachel was identified early in life as having some developmental delays, but she is very healthy and is now consistently described in her monthly reports as very bright, articulate, hard-working and disciplined at school, as well as in her family. She received excellent marks in both math and Chinese on her most recent exams!

An Update on Baby Corey

We want to thank everyone who donated with such kindness to help baby Corey, the newborn who was left following his birth with a serious medical condition.

His first stage surgery went beautifully, and the doctors said he will not need another operation until two months later.

Our director in Anhui spoke several times by phone with the mom’s cousin and convinced him to come to the hospital today.  We learned what we expected.  The child’s mom is very poor (she worked as a cook at a temporary construction site), and, after delivering her son, she knew she could not afford the medical care for such a sick child.  That is why she panicked and abandoned the baby boy. Huggable Hudson: LWB’s Featured Child of the Week

This huggable little man is Hudson. In June 2010, Hudson received surgery to repair his congenital heart defect. Upon discharge, Hudson entered our Fuyang Foster Care Program where he has recovered and adjusted wonderfully to his new, much healthier life. He has been all smiles since he left the hospital.

Hudson is often described as a gentle boy and easily warms up to people. Some of his favorite foods are fruits, noodles, and rice. He is happy to spend time with his older foster brother. He is a great climber, can kick a ball, and loves toys that have an on and off button.

Foster Care’s visit to XiaoXian

Our foster care team’s visit to XiaoXian in Anhui was a day filled with laughter.   We think handing out new beanie babies probably had something to do with it!   The little boys also discovered that writing on your hands with new markers is pretty funny as well, as you can see from Sawyer’s photo above.
