From the very first day of her life, Julia began what was to be a very difficult journey. Due to congenital imperfections of her heart, this winsome six-year old has been on a long road ever since. Even the common cold seemed severe in her little body. In 2006, Love Without Boundaries was able to provide Julia with surgery to help her heart function better. Following this surgery, her caretakers felt she really began to make progress and gain much needed strength. She was a little fighter and surprised everyone as she quickly learned to walk on her own, talked more and more, and became more plump and healthy.

Unfortunately, Julia grew ill once again due to a cyst in her bile duct and had to be re-hospitalized for an additional surgery. However, in characteristic fashion, she picked up right where she left off and continues to blossom. Julia is much loved by all who know her!

These first six years of Julia’s life have been a long road. Currently, she is enrolled in LWB’s Believe in Me education program in Huainan. We hope the road on which she is traveling brings her to a family who can provide her with a second surgery she needs. Over the years, we have kept regular reports on Julia throughout her time in our care and look forward to sharing many photos and all we know about her with her lucky family! Could that family be you or someone you know? If so, please feel free to spread the word that Julia is on the shared list and is ready to begin the next journey in her life — the journey to her waiting family!

In 2004, when I first had the opportunity to work in a Chinese orphanage, there was one little girl who captured my heart. I was amazed by the fact that I could be caring for 200 babies and yet have one that stood out as so special and dear to my heart. Leaving her after eight days of serving in her orphanage was one of the most difficult things I’ve done. And so when the time for my next trip to serve in another orphanage came, I told myself I would not fall in love with one child in particular. Much as I tried, another little girl stole my heart. Now when I work in the orphanages, I know that it’s inevitable – there will always be one or two children that I will form a special bond with – one or two children whose faces are forever etched on my mind and heart and whom daily remain in my prayers. On my most recent trip to China in May 2010, Scott was one of two of the over 500 children I encountered that captured my heart.

What a sweet boy! I call him Scotty. As I write this, descriptive words fly through my head which depict his personality: inquisitive, content, sensitive, calm, happy, hardworking, determined, focused, gentle and resilient. Earlier this year, Scotty began participating in Believe In Me, the LWB-established preschool in his orphanage in Jinjiang. Despite his special needs, he does wonderfully in class and interacting with the other students and teachers. Scotty’s little hands are deformed, but he has a persevering attitude and does well with coloring and stacking blocks.

Like many children, Scotty has a repaired cleft. One afternoon, our team brought the school kids a supply of new books with words in both English and Chinese. For nearly two hours, our team sat with the children and read to them despite the fact that we don’t speak Chinese and the kids don’t understand English. I spent this time with Scotty. I had a basic ABC book with a picture and word for each letter. I went through the book once saying “A-Apple; B-Ball; C-Cow…” Scotty sat quietly beside me, observing the book intently. After completing the letters, I started at the beginning again: “A-Apple” and then I heard the tiniest little voice say “Apple” in perfect English pronunciation. I was shocked! It was coming from Scotty – a little boy who has only heard Chinese his whole life. And so page by page we went “B-Ball, C-Cow, D-Dog…” all the way to “Z-Zebra” with Scotty pronouncing each word clearly after me, a huge feat for a little cleft-affected guy growing up in an orphanage.

Every day, Scotty is in my thoughts and prayers, and I long to hear that he has been matched with a special family of his very own. This amazing boy has so much to contribute to a family and is such a sweetheart. I know because he stole a piece of my heart!

He knows everything fashionable, such as the latest cartoon image and newest songs. His special need is listed as mental delay, but this boy is lively and clever.

Matthew has always had a hard time sitting still in the classroom. The dedicated and caring teachers at Jinjiang have accommodated him with freedoms to explore and keep busy. He enjoys puzzles and music, and especially loves jammin’ on the new electronic keyboard in the classroom. In the photo above, he is really working hard on his artistic masterpiece.

Matthew is in need of a $20 per month sponsorship to continue in the wonderful Believe In Me — Jinjiang program which understands his needs so well. Please visit his sponsor page if you can help!

LWB's Education Program is proud to feature Gracie from our Huainan Believe in Me School as our featured child this week. Gracie is a beautiful six year old girl who has a repaired cleft lip. Gracie entered the program in preschool in September 2007 and she has really made incredible progress. When she first started, she was only three and could do very little, unable to even express her basic needs to let her caregivers know she was hungry or if she needed to go to the bathroom. Gracie was unable to answer simple questions, participate in group activities or play well with the other children.

Well, what an amazing difference LWB's Education Program has made in the life of this precious little girl! Gracie has TRULY blossomed in an incredible way.

Well, what an amazing difference LWB’s Education Program has made in the life of this precious little girl! Gracie has TRULY blossomed in an incredible way. She loves class and she now participates in all classroom activities, actively asks questions, counts to 100, recognizes shapes and colors, writes numbers, recognizes pinyin, and plays with other children. She studies hard and always completes her homework assignments. Gracie likes writing and drawing and is good at reading. And she really enjoys playing sports, singing and dancing.

Ping, pong. Ping, pong. That is the sound coming from the Believe in Me Huainan educational program in Anhui province. Along with ooooos and ahhhhs, lots of giggles and laughs and “its my turn next!” A new table tennis table has been purchased! What FUN! This lovely table can be used indoors or outside for year- round action. Plus, it folds up for convenient storage. The older children are enthusiastically trying their hand at this much loved, much played game in China. Little do they know that while they are having fun they are improving their hand-eye coordination, their gross motor skills, their reflexes and their cardiovascular system. They are learning to keep score, take turns (although I think they get a lot of practice at that), and enjoy China’s national sport. GO HUAINAN! Who knows, maybe China’s next champion will be a BIM Huainan, Anhui graduate!

Believe in me, she asks.
Believe that I am special.
Believe how much my friends mean to me.

Believe in me, she asks.
Believe that I am special.
Believe how much my friends mean to me.
Believe how helpful I am to my teachers.

This precious little girl is Flora from our Believe in Me School in Huainan. She has just turned ten and has been waiting for a long time for her forever family to find her. While she waits, she attends public school while also receiving tutoring and music classes from BIM — Huainan. Flora is developing creativity, problem solving, critical thinking skills as well as learning how to contribute to society.

As much as we love hearing Flora’s teachers brag about how hard she works at school, we are most looking forward to when we hear these proud words from her family. We believe in our hearts that Flora will be someone’s daughter soon and ask you to help us to spread the word. For more information about Flora, contact our adoption advocacy team at adoptionassistance@lwbmail.com. Please help us to spread the word about this hopeful girl…so she can hopefully find her family soon!

Even older girls love a field trip to the zoo! This photo of 15-year old Jo was taken during the Believe in Me -- Jingzhou field trip to the zoo in March. Despite her epilepsy and severe seizures that sometimes disrupt her life, Jo is a very good student who works extremely hard. About a year ago, she had a medical setback and as a result has had to work extra hard to catch up academically. Her character writing is truly lovely. We really admire her perseverance and work ethic!

Jo is one of the children featured in our first annual "Sponsor a Child, Change a Life" program in honor of International Children's Day. Just $20 a month would cover her school fees for Believe In Me so she can continue in this excellent education program. Please visit our website to learn more about her and other children just waiting for sponsors!

Joy. Glee. Fun! It seems like every time we see photos like this one from our Believe In Me school in Jinjiang, someone is laughing, playing and having a ball. What a pleasure it must be for the Education volunteers to be a part of this! We'd like you to meet two of these Education volunteers as part of our continuing series, "A Day in the Life". While these two volunteers work with very different types of educational programs, they both have the opportunity to help individuals learn and reach for potential they never even knew they had.

Marilee Gilmore, Believe In Me --Jinjiang Coordinator: I found LWB on the Internet when searching for a foster child to sponsor in 2005. I had been so blessed by the adoption of my daughter from South Korea in 1984 and wanted to give back a little to another international child. I had researched different foundations and was amazed that this all-volunteer organization could do so much with the money contributed. A year later I joined the Education Team as a volunteer and have been with them ever since. I have been fortunate to be the Coordinator of Believe In Me-Jinjiang since we established the school in 2007.

Being retired, I have the opportunity to work at odd times during the day and evening. I love the freedom of working from my computer and as I wish. There is so much pleasure in being a LWB volunteer. Knowing that we are making a difference in the lives of these children every single day keeps me motivated to continue the work. I really enjoy seeing how much the children blossom in Education and how well we work as a team to improve their lives. My kids in school need the great start that the Nutrition program gives them, and many have Medical needs that need addressing. It is so great that we can all work together for them. I enjoy playing a small part in the work that we do.

Alyssa Ericksen, Associate Director of Mama’s Wish: I learned about LWB on a Yahoo group and immediately went and sponsored a little girl with the same special need as my son. I then did some research on LWB and was surprised and impressed when I read the annual report and discovered how low the administration costs are compared to the amount of work being done! The model of running a charity with volunteers intrigued me, and I decided that I would like to be one of them in some small capacity. I completed the application and was “hired” to be a coordinator for the Mama’s Wish program. We promptly chose a young student in the program to sponsor, and I look forward to my reports on her. LWB has continued to surpass my expectations, and I am amazed every day by the dedication of the volunteers and the scope of the work that we do in China.

I had just agreed to become the associate director when an earthquake hit the province where our program is based. I worried constantly about the kids until we were able to confirm that they were all safe. A typical day for me might involve answering emails, sending out reports to new sponsors, reviewing the month’s financial reports or emailing with my coordinators about their assignments. As a new director, I am definitely still “learning the ropes!”

Wangchu Tsering attends Xuri Poor Aid High School, thanks to sponsors of Mama’s Wish, and will graduate in 2011 from high school with vocational training in medicine.

I am privileged to be part of a program that allows girls, boys and young women and men to complete an education in a region of China where opportunities for them are scarce. We are truly changing many lives as we support these dedicated students. Another aspect that I value in volunteering for LWB is getting to see the work of the other programs at a deeper level. I avidly read the emails about little babies arriving at the healing homes, about field trips taken in our Believe in Me schools and about successful and life saving heart surgeries. I look forward every day to all of the good news posted about the children in our program. I am truly grateful to be a small part of this wonderful organization.

Are you an educator or a special educator, or someone who has connections to a school? Are you a professional who works with children who have special needs? If you answered “yes” to any of these questions, you may be able to help us with an important project for our LWB Education program!

Most of the students in our Believe In Me Schools have mild to moderate special needs. As the population attending our schools grows and changes, we continue to provide our teachers with the essential ongoing support and training that they need. As part of this training, we are hoping to put together videos of various special education lessons or activities, as well as some general education activities in the areas of art and music, to provide to the teachers at our Believe In Me Schools.

Would you be able to help us by getting permission from your school to film music or art classroom activities, or special education lessons? These videos can be anywhere from 10-30 minutes long, and can be carried out one-on-one or as a classroom, by therapists OR teachers. They should be lessons that can be easily used within a classroom setting (i.e. no fancy equipment required). We will then have the films translated/dubbed for our teachers in China.

If you are interested in helping us with this project, please contact our Director of Education, Kate Dlugozima at kate.dlugozima@lwbmail.com. Any assistance you can provide will be much appreciated. Thank you for your continued support of the LWB Education program!

When Sara first became a student at our Shantou Believe in Me School in 2007, the teachers described her as shy and quiet. She never smiled for pictures, and the teachers were very excited when they finally “caught” her participating in dance class. A few months later she smiled for a photograph displaying her artwork.

When Sara first became a student at our Shantou Believe in Me School in 2007, the teachers described her as shy and quiet. She never smiled for pictures, and the teachers were very excited when they finally “caught” her participating in dance class. A few months later she smiled for a photograph displaying her artwork.

The teachers now describe nine-year old Sara as a good helper and always willing to share and eager to learn. She now LOVES to pose for pictures (as you can see!)

Despite her difficulties with verbal language issues, Sarah completes all of her school work, can recognize and also write basic Chinese characters, and interacts well with the teachers and other students. In fact, she has improved so much in her person-to-person communication that she was even able to help this wiggly little toddler get his shoes on when everyone else thought that to be a nearly impossible task.

I think we can all agree she has an absolutely beautiful smile and very expressive eyes. I have always felt I could “read” her eyes, and in this photograph I think she may be saying “Please tell my family to come and bring me home.”

Please help us help Sarah get word to her family that she is waiting for them! She is on the shared list with a need of verbal language issues. If you’d like more information about her or the shared list, please contact us at info@lwbmail.com.
