Michelle: Sweet as Watermelon!

Sometimes it seems like a person’s favorite color is indicative of their general outlook on life. Michelle says her favorite color is a cheerful yellow, and this seems to mirror her sunny personality! This thirteen-year-old girl is ready and waiting for a family to call her own and doesn’t have much time to find them as she will age out when she reaches fourteen. A student in our Believe in Me Huainan School, Michelle’s infectious smile and outgoing nature has made her many friends, and she has a great capacity for affection. One of Michelle’s great joys is singing with friends. We can imagine how much fun she would have singing karaoke!

School is in Session in Changzhi!

School is now in session at our new Believe in Me Changzhi School! Teachers are instructing, students are learning, and overall everyone seems to be doing really well at our newest school in Shanxi Province. We wanted to share some of the photos of the classrooms and students from the early days of this exciting new venture that is fully sponsored by our wonderful friends in Spain, LWB España.

Jerry and Friends in Reading Class

Several weeks ago we featured Jerry, “The Assistant” on LWB Community. Jerry earned this nickname because of his friendly, helpful attitude towards visitors at LWB’s Believe in Me Changde School. Just a few days after running the blog about Jerry, we received a cute video of him reading with some of his school friends and thought our readers might enjoy seeing more of him.

“The Assistant” now needs some assistance of his own in the form of a family! A family could help Jerry read that book as well as provide him with the therapy he needs. Jerry’s positive attitude and innate curiosity about life is already in place, and now he needs the love and care of a family to help him grow even further.

Jerry, “The Assistant”

New to LWB Community this month is Jerry! Jerry is an eleven-year-old boy with cerebral palsy whom LWB has worked with for many years. In May 2006 LWB established our Believe in Me Changde School.  Jerry was the most memorable child we met on that first trip; in fact, the group that went there still laughs today about how adorable and charming he was!

Our staff was trying to assess the children identified as students for the school and take photos of them. Jerry would grab a child in the room, stand them in front of the photographer, step back, and say “cheeeeeeeeze,” so we could get a picture. After the child was dismissed by Jerry, he would come over to where we were recording notes and check our work. During that visit he earned the nickname of “The Assistant.”

Dawn: LWB’s Featured Child of the Week

Dawn is a sweet three-year-old girl from our Huainan foster care program who loves to dress up in fancy outfits and is rarely photographed without her pearl necklace! She also enjoys singing and dancing, talking on the phone, and riding her tricycle with her foster brother, Nick.  Dawn and Nick are very close; if anyone ever tries to tease Dawn, Nick always defends her! In true “mother’s little helper” fashion, Dawn likes to help feed the chickens, and help out around the house. We are told she especially enjoys using the rolling pin while her foster mother makes dumplings!

Mild Mickey

In the interest of adoption, LWB Community will be profiling some waiting children whose orphanages have asked for help in finding families for them.  However, we do want to be clear that these children are not in LWB programs, and we have no personal knowledge of them.

Mickey is a sweet five-year-old boy from Deyang orphanage in Sichuan province with a mild, easy personality.  He was born with congenital cataracts in both eyes.  As a baby, he received cataract extraction and then had lens implantation surgery in May 2009. Bright lights can bother Mickey, and he will put his hands over his eyes in these situations.

Cheryl: LWB’s Featured Child of the Week

Cheryl at Huainan

Three-year old Cheryl participates in several of our programs. Through our Huainan nutrition program, she received quality infant formula to support proper growth and development. She has moved on to the toddler formula that provides nutrients, such as iron and calcium, necessary for continued development of the brain and bones. Cheryl just began attending LWB’s Believe in Me Huainan School. Although shy and a little timid, Cheryl enjoys going to school with her friends.

Grants…Grants…Grants!

Love Without Boundaries has been fortunate to be able to offer grants to a number of children who are in need of a little extra help in being chosen by a family. Each adoption grant is attached to a specific child and not to a particular agency or specific parents. Generally, once the adoptive family receives travel approval, the grant money is paid directly to the adoption agency to assist with the adoption expenses. We are very excited to announce that this month has brought us two new $2,000 grant recipients: Rocky and David!

Rocky

Rocky earned his nickname by being shy and pretending he was asleep when volunteers visited the Believe in Me Changde School in Hunan he was attending. When he thought no one was looking, Rocky would open his eyes and take a peek at the visitors, and he eventually overcame his fear. His bravery earned the respect of the LWB volunteers, who gave him the nickname “Rocky.” Nine-year-old Rocky was also a grant recipient in 2008; however, a family never was matched with him, and eventually the grant funds went to help bring another child home.

David Matthew…or Jackie Chan?

Just like Jackie Chan, David Matthew looks ready to take on the world! He’s making his first appearance on LWB Community, and we’re so excited to tell you about this fantastic seven-year-old. David Matthew is a student at our Believe In Me Changde School, and his teachers have nothing but praise for him.

Tenacious Tommy

Nearly every photo we have of seven-year-old Tommy seems to show him playing with a toy or working on a puzzle! He certainly seems to be happily concentrating on the game in front of him in the above photo. Several months ago, we featured Tommy in the blog “Tommy Boy”. Tommy is from our Believe In Me Jingzhou school in Hubei province and has been on the shared list waiting for a family since October 2010.
