Our Zhaotong foster care program in Yunnan province is growing!   We have four wonderful new children in need of three sponsors each to join our program and benefit from the love and support that a foster family offers. Our search for foster parents has begun and we would love to get the children into their new foster homes as soon as possible. The three youngest children will also benefit from our cereal program which delivers a box of cereal each month for each child up to 24 months of age.

The first sponsor to sign up to support each child has been allowed to choose the English name of the child. As you can see from the adorable photos, three of the four new children entering the Zhaotong program already have English names!

This spring, we received a set of videos of Gena showing her chatting with and interacting with her foster family. Her little voice is so cute, and she seems to take charge of the room with her very charismatic personality! As is the tradition in China, Gena received new clothes for spring festival. In this photo it looks like she isn’t too happy with her new woolen sweater. No doubt she has told everyone her opinion!

Gena has been paperwork-ready for over a year now. Surely there is a family out there somewhere just waiting for a spunky, chatty, feisty girl to come and take charge of their lives!

Last week we shared a blog about a very special girl named Suzy who has a gorgeous, crystal-clear voice. Some readers were not able to view the video of Suzy singing, so we’re running an encore presentation with videos that will hopefully work better this time around.

In fall 2010, we featured lovely twelve-year-old Suzy on our blog in Suzy: Look With the Heart. Suzy is part of our Zhaotong foster care program in Yunnan and attends a boarding school for the blind with her foster brother, who is also completely blind. She has just enjoyed spending the spring holiday home from boarding school with her foster grandmother, with whom she is very close. When her grandmother’s back aches from doing the household chores, Suzy is so kind to her and rubs her back to help her relax.  After meal times, she also tries to help her foster grandmother by straightening up the kitchen. She knows where all of the bowls and kitchen pans belong and can put them all away on her own.

We were so excited to receive these videos of Suzy this past week!  The first one shows her braille notebook and, more importantly, shows her singing like an angel. Suzy’s song begins at around 2:00 into the video, and we know you won’t want to miss hearing her sweet voice!

Like most teenagers, Suzy loves the telephone and spends a lot of time talking to her friends. She also likes listening to pop music on the radio and on the television. At school she works hard so that her foster grandmother will be proud of her. But home is where the heart is, and she always looks forward to the weekend when she returns home to her grandmother.

Suzy is  still looking for her forever family, but as she is getting closer to the adoption cutoff age of fourteen, she does not have a lot of time left to find a permanent home. Will you help us share her beautiful song and spread the word that Suzy is waiting on the shared list?

Fall is harvest time, and here you can see Gena enjoying some delicious corn. She has a healthy appetite and certainly seems to have a zest for life!

Gena loves summer because it allows her the opportunity to play outside more. In the past, she would never go outside because she was scared due to her blindness, but lately we have seen her in pictures enjoying the rough and tumble of outdoor play. She particularly likes it when her foster father swings her around by the arms.

We love this darling photo of Gena in her raincoat, ready for spring showers. She is also said to enjoy a lively game of chase.

Gena is currently living with a foster family in our Zhaotong Foster Care Program.  Her best friend used to live next door, but she was adopted last month. Understandably, this has been quite difficult for Gena. However, Gena is also on the Waiting Children List and will hopefully have her own turn to meet her forever family!

We think that once you read about Suzy, you will agree that this quote describes how she lives her life.  Like any typical pre-teen, Suzy’s favorite activities are chatting with her friends and listening to music.  She has a loving heart for others, especially her close friends and foster family.  Suzy is different from many other typical teens, however, in that she does not have a family of her own.  In addition to that rather large obstacle, Suzy is blind.

Currently, Suzy lives in our Zhaotong Foster Care Program in Yunnan Province where she attends a school for the blind and is often at the top of the class. Music and Chinese are her favorite subjects, with math and English being somewhat more difficult for her. In this photo, you can see her working at school with one of her teachers and her favorite fluffy bear, who sometimes keeps her company during the day!

Suzy’misses helping to care for her baby foster sister, who was recently adopted. Described as someone who listens well and with her heart, Suzy is also said to be quiet, kind, and a bit shy.

Suzy would benefit so much from the opportunities afforded to her by a forever family of her own. Time is of the essence for Suzy as she is currently twelve years old and is only eligible for adoption until she turns fourteen. Please help us find a forever home for Suzy!

Our Friday Photo of the Week features tiny Jimmy from our Zhaotong foster care program. Our manager delivered some new toys to each child in the program recently and captured Jimmy checking out his new blocks. Doesn’t it look like they’re nearly as big as he is? He’s only a few months old and has just arrived in foster care, so we’ll look forward to seeing Jimmy grow into his new blocks in the months to come!

It’s Friday, and we’d like to introduce you to some darling new arrivals to our foster care programs!

At just two months old, winsome Kim has already experienced surgery for pulmonary cysts. We are hoping she will be released from the hospital next week so she can join our Zhang Village foster care program. Doesn’t she look anxious to get started with the real business of life? All of us on the Foster Care team feel incredibly privileged to be able to work with children like Kim and watch these children grow and develop within their foster families. We enjoy watching their personalities develop and are so grateful to our wonderful foster families and sponsors.

Jimmy is truly a new arrival as he was born just this month. He is all ready to join our Zhaotong foster care program once he gets a sponsor! At a later stage, Jimmy will need corrective surgery for urological issues.

Kim and Jimmy are so young but are by no means our youngest children. We have a newborn baby who is not even a week old. She just received surgery for an intestinal blockage and will be coming to our Huainan foster care program in a few weeks.

So many other lovely children have received surgery courtesy of our wonderful medical donors and are now awaiting a sponsor so that they can enter foster care. Take a look at just a few of the children we currently have on our website!

For the past two and a half years, exuberant eight-year old Rosa has been in our Zhaotong foster care program.  Rosa was born with a clubbed foot and an extra toe and also has suffered nerve damage following surgery for spinal bifida.   These and other medical issues have prevented her from attending school, but Rosa refuses to let that stop her from learning.  To support her desire to read and write, her foster parents bought a little desk and chair for her and put it in their home.  Every day, Rosa sits down with her exercise books and pencils and practises writing characters and some mathematical problems. Her most fervent hope and dream is to go to school.

Rosa has impressed her foster parents and other adults who know her with her aptitude for learning.  Many have commented that she is extremely quick to grasp new things.  She has recently been heard singing a perfect English version of “Old McDonald Had a Farm”– which she learned from watching TV!

Not only is Rosa quick to learn, but she’s also extremely independent, polite and helpful.  In her foster parents’ eyes, she is a “perfect child”   Rosa had a younger foster brother that she loved to care for and teach, and when he was adopted earlier this year she was crushed and misses him greatly.

Wouldn’t it be wonderful to see Rosa find her own forever family this year — one who would be able to support her obvious desire to learn?  We can only imagine the love and joy that Rosa’s passion for life could bring to a very special family.
