Art for the Heart
To send light into the darkness of men’s hearts – such is the duty of the artist. ~Schumann
Todd’s foster father had a very heavy heart before Todd had his recent heart surgery. He had been so anxious about his little foster son for so long and could barely sleep at night due to worry. This is the story of Todd’s surgery and recovery and how art literally helped his heart to heal…and helped to lighten his foster father’s heart.
The absolute devotion of little Todd’s foster father shines through in these photos taken during Todd’s recent stay in the hospital. Last year, Todd came into the medical program at eight months old for a first-stage repair for Tetralogy of Fallot (ToF). The surgery went smoothly and he recovered well. In May of this year, we had Todd evaluated again and decided to move forward with the second-stage surgery.
On May 21, Todd and his foster father arrived at the hospital in Shanghai. Todd was very scared when he first arrived and cried so hard when his foster father put him down. The only way he would allow the doctors to examine him was if his foster father held him. Before he could have surgery, he had to be treated for a cold and some minor intestinal issues.
Several weeks later, Todd had his surgery which took just over 4 hours and was a success. After spending two days in the ICU, he was moved to a regular room and was thrilled when he finally got to see his foster father!
The doctors told the foster dad that, with good care, Todd would be able to lead a normal life.
Todd’s two surgeries were quite expensive. However, we were able to fund both of his surgeries — and essentially save Todd’s life — through generous donations given towards his care by our International Children’s Day “Sponsor a Child” program as well as funds raised through LWB’s annual “Born In My Heart” Art Auction. Many of us love the thrill of finding and competing for treasures during this annual art auction, but it’s even more thrilling to see tangible evidence of a life completely changed through the auction’s profits. We are grateful to all who contributed — in one way or another — to healing Todd’s heart!
