Celebrating 15 Years of Love: An Update From Phillip

2018 is a very special year to all of us at Love Without Boundaries, as we celebrate 15 years of helping orphaned and vulnerable children find the hope and healing they deserve. All through this wonderful anniversary year, we’ll be bringing you updates on some of the children whose lives were changed since our work began in 2003.  We hope as you read their stories over the coming months that you will know just what a difference our incredible LWB supporters have made in the world.  Join with us as we celebrate 15 years of love.

Our first update is about a little boy who was helped by LWB in 2016. People all over the world fell in love with precious Phillip, a baby from an orphanage in southern China who was born with a complex heart condition called Tetralogy of Fallot, or ToF. LWB arranged for Phillip’s open heart surgery to be done in Shanghai, but due to severe respiratory complications, this little warrior ended up spending a long and worry-filled four months in the hospital on his journey to health. We were so grateful to everyone who supported his care and prayed for his full recovery.

Phillip was adopted in fall 2017 and lives in the United States. We are honored to share an update from his adoptive family today. They write:

We have been home with our sweet Malakai (formerly Phillip) for about five months now. He has grown so fast since he has been with us!

Malakai has gone up five sizes in clothing, and his strength and gross motor skills match his age. He is full of joy and loves music! Malakai’s heart looks amazing, and the cardiologist said the repair that was done in China was a textbook example of a Tetralogy of Fallot (TOF) repair. He likely won’t need another surgery until he is in his early twenties. He said Malakai could even be an Olympian if he really wanted to! We have been cleared for all activities, and he is no longer on any medications.

Malakai gets constant entertainment from his older brother Levi (4) and his little sister Isla (2). He adores them and they adore him. He is learning to communicate with us through signing and has even started preschool one day a week. He loves other kids, pets, the outdoors and his stuffed bunny. He lights up whenever his Daddy or I walk into the room and he has the sweetest laugh. He is surrounded by uncles, aunts, cousins, grandparents, and friends who think he is amazing! He loves to eat and is back to having those chubby kissable cheeks.

Kai-kai, as we like to call him, enjoys throwing balls, jumping on the trampoline, running around the house laughing and screaming, playing with cars and trains, peek-a-boo and chasing his siblings around. Bath time is one of his favorite things; he could live in the bathtub if we let him! He also is obsessed with nursery rhymes and music.

There is not much Malakai is afraid of, and he has faced each new situation with curiosity and spunk. He is a fighter, a warrior, and definitely still has his indomitable spirit. He is an overcomer and is going to do big things in life. He still has a lot of growing to do, but we are so grateful to say that his health is not a concern.

We want to take this opportunity to thank every single person out there who donated, prayed, visited, or contributed in any way to Malakai’s healing journey. He has a passion for life, and I know he wouldn’t be here today without people like you and Love Without Boundaries Foundation.

We were there from the beginning watching his story unfold through Love Without Boundaries’ Facebook page and even donated toward his care ourselves. We did not know at that time that he would be our son, but we were aware of how loved he was and how much people care about him! We all watched him fight for his life with Nanny Wen by his side and cheered him on as he recovered.

His hospital stay was long, scary and expensive, but he was surrounded by love and was well taken care of. We can’t thank you enough for giving our son this chance to not just live, but thrive!

Malakai, Chad, Danae, Levi and Isla
