Day One a Huge Success

On Sept 27th, our medical team arrived in two groups. Wendy, Linda and Shane arrived in Hefei at 3:00 pm. Dr. Ness and the remaining team members arrived by a very late flight and this flight was delayed by one hour and half. They arrived at around 1:00 am on Sunday! Anhui Children’s Hospital vice president Mr. Liu and a couple of other directors stil insisted on going to the airport to greet our medical team. They presented flowers to Dr. Ness.

By the time the team got checked into their hotel, it was already nearly 2:00 am.

The next day we started from Holiday Inn for the hospital at 10:30 am. We had exchanged opinions with the ACH doctors/nurses on how to handle patients, give medicine orders, checking vitals, etc. Dr. Ness and the team checked the patients, as well as the operation room and recovery room. When all of these were done, it was already around 1:30 pm. We then had a lunch in the restaurant close to ACH across the street.

After the lunch we went to our LWB cleft house. Dr. Ness checked all the cleft home babies. The team had much fun with the babies at the cleft home and played with the kids for quite a long time. They had a group photo with our nannies and babies.

On Sept 29th, we started from the hotel for ACH at 7:15 am. It was an early departure for everyone! Upon arrival at the hospital, the team conducted one more quick check on the patients, and then right at 8:00 am, our first patient was moved to the operation room.

The first surgery went very well. The second one was a bilateral lip, and it really took much longer time. At around 11:30, Dr. Ness operated on the third child. The team had a very simple lunch at around 1:30 pm. After the lunch, they started to operate children as scheduled. When all the surgeries were done, Dr. Ness made rounds on all the post surgery babies and also check the other patients. After this, it was the time for the last baby who was to be moved from the recovery room to the floor and Dr.. Ness checked this baby again. That brought to the end of the first day. We did 5 surgeries and everything went very well. We all gathered at the gate of the main building of the hospital and waited for our van, which was on its way back from Huainan SWI. By the time the team got back to the hotel it was around 7:00 pm. The first day of was a long one but everyone felt it was such a success.  I hope you will enjoy the photos below from this great first day.

So happy to hear that you all arrived in Hefei safely and that the surgeries are going so well. Sorry about the flight delay from Shanghai to Hefei. I heard about the delay from the tour guide in Shanghai and kept tracking the flight status. What a relief knowing that you finally arrived in Hefei safely and that you received such warm greetings at the airport. I wish you smooth operations the rest of the week! Thank you for all that you are doing for the children!
