Emily: LWB’s Featured Child of the Week

Emily is a beautiful nine-month-old girl from Fujian Province who was born with a rare birth defect called bladder exstrophy. This means that Emily’s abdominal wall didn’t close properly in utero and part of her bladder is exposed and protrudes from the abdominal wall. As you can imagine, it can be difficult to care for a child with this condition which is why we immediately sent her to our Heartbridge Pediatric Healing Unit in Beijing. At Heartbridge, Emily has received the care she needs to remain healthy while she waits for her chance to travel to Hong Kong where she will receive a highly complex and specialized surgery by the world-renowned surgeons at MedArt. Emily will need to stay in Hong Kong for six weeks and will then return to Heartbridge to continue her recovery under the watchful eye of Dr. Joyce Hill and Dr. Steve Martin at Heartbridge.

Emily is scheduled to travel to Hong Kong sometime in February. Her caregivers are going to miss her beautiful smile and her ballerina moves while she is gone, but this is an extraordinary chance for this little girl to receive surgery from the best surgeons in the field.

Is Emily’s healing care fully funded? I can’t do much at the moment, but if she still needs sponsors, please let me know. I know she is healing from her surgery right now. I emailed LWB just the other day inquiring about her, and have since been on the ‘hunt’ for info regarding her surgery and outcome. From what I can tell, the surgery went very well. She has remained in my thoughts and prayers for months now.

Our daughter, Khloe, had the same bladder exstrophy surgery in Hong Kong back in Sept of 2008. She is now a vibrant three year old and we are so blessed to have her. I wonder if Khloe and Emily had some of the same surgeons…and possibly some of the same caregivers?! I have a scrapbook of photos from her time in HK with her surgeons, nurses and caretakers/nannies that were sponsored for her as she recovered. It was given to me by her foster home when we adopted her, and it is priceless.

I have had a very strong burden on my heart for Emily since I first seen her on your website. She has remained in my prayers and will continue. Do you know if her papers have been filed for adoption yet? I pray she has a family of her own very soon! Would love to see some post-op photos of her and that sweet smile. I’m so hopeful for her future!

    Blessings and Hugs,
    ~ Tanya Thom
