#GivingTuesday Gives Hope to Baby Mateo

Yesterday was #GivingTuesday, and we at LWB decided that our focus for this day of giving back was going to be focused on one little baby in a children’s hospital in Shanghai.

While many of us on the western side of the world are shopping for presents, putting up Christmas trees, and hanging our holiday lights, baby Mateo, an orphaned boy from southern China, is undergoing dialysis up to 11 times each day. His kidneys are failing, and doctors are working to prevent complete kidney failure as the family who has chosen him for adoption works frantically to expedite the permissions they need to bring him home.

How beautiful is this amazing baby boy in his blue puppy dog cap?

The adoption agency who is handling Mateo’s file has told us that the family will most likely travel in about two months’ time. We know that his orphanage does not have the medical resources available to handle his dialysis needs. This means that baby Mateo will most likely remain hospitalized until it is time to meet his new family.

Two months is a very long time for a baby to be on a hospital ward! So we have hired one of our favorite nannies in Shanghai to care for him. She has helped so many babies for LWB, including some with really complex medical needs like Phillip and Luna, so we know Mateo is in excellent hands.

You can see from this photo just how tiny this little guy is for a 16 month old. His nanny is trying to keep him content with new toys and of course as much formula as he wants.

Mateo’s daily hospital fees are just under $200 a day – costs worth every penny as the dialysis is keeping him alive until he can meet his family and get home to the ongoing medical care he will need. But of course Mateo’s treatment only happens because of the kindness of people around the world, most of whom only know him through his photos.

Yesterday you opened your heart in such an incredible way to this 13-pound warrior. On #GivingTuesday, we received donations totaling $14,000 which should allow Mateo’s care to continue until his parents-to-be can get to China for his adoption. Over $5,000 of this amount was raised by our supporters through Facebook’s fundraiser feature!

You gave from your heart to help give this baby hope — and his second chance. You have shown once again that real community can truly change lives.

On behalf of precious Mateo, we send our DEEPEST THANKS.

Stay strong little man! Mommy and daddy will be there as quickly as they possibly can.
