Healing Heart Defects: A Team Effort

When one of LWB’s China Medical Directors is asked to help a child with Congenital Heart Disease (CHD) it is just the first step in a long journey of hope through healing.

Our first step is to determine the type of CHD. There are more than 40 different types of heart defects with a range of severity for each case. LWB’s Medical team gets evaluations in China as well as from a team of specialists on our Medical Advisory Board to determine what type of surgery the child will need and what other type of care they will require.

Often children with heart defects have difficulty feeding and gaining weight because their little bodies just aren’t working efficiently. So in order to get children to the 5kg weight marker, where they better tolerate surgery and anesthesia, they require frequent feedings and high calorie nutrition. LWB’s Healing Homes are equipped to give these children the supportive care they need pre-operatively, and LWB’s Preemie & Special Formula Fund supplies the high-calorie formula to help babies pack on weight quickly with as little effort as possible.

Once the baby has reached 5kg (about 11 pounds) and the surgery is fully funded, LWB’s Medical team moves in and makes arrangements for surgery at a top children’s hospital in China.

Post-surgery, the children recover in the healing home until they are stable enough to be moved into one of LWB’s foster care programs and possibly LWB’s education program when they are old enough.

But NONE of this would be possible without the generous support of LWB’s Donor Team — all of you!

Laurie, shown in the photos above, is in need of a team of sponsors to help her begin her journey to hope and healing.  You can see her on the Medical sponsor page as well as the Healing Home page.

Linda, a current resident of our Anhui Healing Home, needs people to join her team of sponsors as well as she prepares for her heart surgery!

Thank you so much for walking this road with us and supporting these beautiful children during any step of this process.
