Laurie: LWB’s Featured Child of the Week
Laurie came to LWB’s attention when she was two months old because of a pretty serious heart defect. She was admitted to our Heartbridge Healing Home so she could be closely monitored while she gained weight to qualify for her heart surgery.
Laurie’s heart defect is called Tetralogy of Fallot (TOF). She also has a large Ventricular Septal Defect (VSD) and moderate pulmonary stenosis.
Because Laurie’s heart can’t pump enough oxygenated blood throughout her body, she gets tired very easily. In fact, just drinking a full bottle takes so much effort she ends up burning more calories than she receives! So the Heartbridge team has made things a bit easier for Laurie by offering her a bottle for a while and finishing her feeding through a nasogastric tube (NG tube). This keeps Laurie in good practice for eating on her own but also allows her to use her calories for growing rather than for trying to eat.
Laurie needs sponsors for her life-saving heart surgery. If you would like to help heal Laurie’s heart, your donation in any amount is welcome. Sponsors will receive updates while Laurie is in the hospital, as well as four additional updates over the next 12 months once she has been discharged. Thank you for being a part of Laurie’s team!
