LWB’s China/Cambodia/US Cardiac Initiative
Around the world, over 1 million babies are born each year with congenital heart defects, with Asia reporting the highest prevalence. Since LWB began by helping one little boy receive heart surgery, providing children with the cardiac care they deserve remains a key part of our charity work. Over the last 15 years, we’ve built strong partnerships with several pediatric heart hospitals in China, and so many lives have been saved with your support.
When we began working in several rural villages in Cambodia, we realized that access to essential medical care can be a real challenge. Many families live in immense poverty and face a lack of trained doctors in the rural regions.
Last year we began discussions with our partners in both Cambodia and China to see how we could combine efforts to ensure that children with heart defects are identified at the earliest possible age to get the care they need to live a full life.
This coming week, doctors and nurses from Hefei High-Tech Cardiovascular Hospital and Anhui Children’s Hospital will be evaluating hundreds of children in the villages where we work. Heart screens will be provided for every baby and child, with echocardiograms being done when needed, so we can identify any kids born with unknown heart issues.
We can’t wait to bring you more news from western Cambodia later this week. Three countries – one mission to help children…..that’s a true example of love without boundaries.
