Marcus: LWB’s Featured Child of the Week

Smiling Marcus

In April all six of the babies in the Henan Healing Home had successful cleft lip repair surgery during LWB’s 2012 Cleft Exchange trip held at the Kaifeng Children’s Hospital. These babies have all healed and graduated to foster care programs. With the discharge of these babies, new babies have entered the home to receive the devoted care of the nannies and nutritious formula in special bottles designed for babies with cleft. This cycle of nurture and healing continues to help more babies born with cleft lip and palate gain health and healing.

Marcus upon arrival at Henan Healing Home

Marcus is one of the new babies. He came to us in May from an orphanage in Shanxi Province at 1 1/2 months old and weighing in at 7.4 pounds. He showed early symptoms of an upper respiratory illness. However, Marcus didn’t let his slow beginning stop him. He began to interact with the nannies from day one, showing great eye contact and a beautiful smile. He also quickly adapted to his special bottle that allowed his nanny to gently squeeze the formula into his mouth so that he could drink more easily. He gained 0.2 pounds in the first week and has gained 2.4 pounds over the past month!

Marcus will be with us for about five more months since he needs to be a little older before he can have his bilateral cleft lip repaired. He has become just a little spoiled and loves to sit and play with his wonderful nannies. We are sure they enjoy being with this loving little boy.

Marcus needs additional sponsors at $50 per month (or $25 per month for a shared sponsorship) to help pay for his stay at our Henan Healing Home as he continues to get ready for his surgery. Sponsors will receive reports and photos of this sweet boy each month. We would love to have you join us in watching this sweet boy continue to thrive as he prepares to receive his life-changing cleft surgery.
