Happy Autumn Moon Festival to All!

Today in China, families and children are celebrating the Autumn Moon Festival, also known as the Mid-Autumn Festival.

The festival is a time spent reuniting with family and loved ones, eating a nice meal and special treats, and sharing stories under the moon.  Gratitude is the spirit of this holiday.  The festival is very much like holidays found all around the world focused on giving thanks for the abundance of gifts nature brings, togetherness, and celebrating the changing of the season. Wisdom Wednesdays: Celebrating Your Child’s Culture

When we adopted our older daughter in 2007, my husband and I felt really lucky to have so many resources available to us. We live just outside a major city with a thriving Chinatown. We have Chinese restaurants, celebrations in Chinatown, and several Chinese schools in our backyard. What we quickly came to realize was that we needed to have Chinese culture in our home — not just next to it. Here are three of the main ways we have incorporated culture into our home.

Celebrating the Autumn Moon Festival in Shaoguan

With the Autumn Moon Festival quickly approaching, our Believe in Me schools are excitedly preparing parties for the children. In Shaoguan, the location of our newest Believe in Me school, the children performed for an audience of local adults, had a “street party” in their front outside atrium, and then had another party in their classroom. Helen, our Shaoguan program manager, told us that everyone had an amazing time, and that sometimes it was hard to determine who was having more fun – the kids, the locals, or the teachers!

Ronan, The Little Artist from Anhui

New to LWB Community is Ronan, the boy we like to call “The Little Artist from Anhui.” Ronan’s vision is impaired by the fact that he does not have a left eyeball. However, he doesn’t let that impairment stand in his way one bit as you will see from the many activities he enjoys.
