A Healing Home Field Trip

Last week, some of the children from our Healing Home went on a field trip to an indoor play area at a big shopping mall with some volunteers. Due to COVID restrictions, this was the first play trip outside of the Healing Home that many of the children had ever been on. As you can see, they had a marvelous time making new friends, building confidence, and broadening their horizons!

Cambodia Education Programs Continue Despite COVID

When schools in Cambodia shut down again due to rising COVID cases, our teachers were understandably frustrated. The students were making great progress, and they didn’t want them to lose momentum or become discouraged. So, our always-innovative Believe In Me Sokhem teachers decided to deliver schoolwork to their students at home!

New Beginnings in Cambodia

Thanks to our wonderful supporters, LWB has been able to deliver over 500,000 pounds of emergency food supplies to children and their families during COVID. As we’ve headed out into new locations, we’ve met some truly remarkable people along the way. Today, I want to introduce you to a very special family from rural Cambodia.

Love for Leap Village

The amazing LWB community has provided emergency food supplies to hungry children around the world for the past year. We have been so thankful to be able to bring essential and life-sustaining food to villages and orphanages most in need. One of the extra blessings of having our teams go out to the most remote regions is that we are then able to identify other critical needs for children that we try our best to address. When our team first went to Leap Village, a rural Cambodian village near the border of Thailand, they were surprised at how many landmines still cover the area.

Five Little Heart Patients Travel from Uganda to India

Yesterday, five little Uganda heart patients boarded a plane and traveled to India to prepare for life-saving cardiac surgeries that are unavailable to them in their home country. Their parents have spent the past few months gathering medical reports, passports, visas, and taking COVID tests. We hope you’ll follow along with us for the next few weeks as we get to know these heart warriors and their stories.

Stories of Hope: Jennifer

Earlier this year, as we began COVID emergency food distributions along the Cambodian border with Thailand, we met a young widow named Elva. Her husband had been killed just a few weeks before as he stepped on a land mine while trying to cross the border to find food for his family. Elva was left with 8 small children in her care, including Baby Jennifer.  With no income and no home of their own, our team found them living in a temporary tent shelter, exposed to the elements. Wrapped in a red piece of cloth, Baby Jennifer was clearly in need of urgent nutritional support.

Emergency Food Relief in India

We recently discussed the situation of orphanages in western Odisha, India with YCDA, our partner for foster care there. They informed us that there are 16 orphanages which are registered by the government but receive no government support. Normally, these orphanages rely on local donations for the children, but with the rapid spread of COVID in the region, most local donations have come to a halt. This region is already severely impoverished, so the 533 children living in these orphanages are in great need of emergency food relief.

Remote Learning in Cambodia

When Cambodia made the decision to temporarily shutter its schools due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the government suggested that all learning go online. There was one major problem for the regions where LWB works, however. The majority of children in these rural villages don’t even have access to electricity, no less the internet. Our passionate teachers were committed to making sure the children’s lessons continued. Now, each day they travel by bicycle, and motorbike, often on mud-soaked dirt roads, to deliver paper learning packets and in-person instruction to even the most remote households.

Elgin’s Story of Hope and Healing

Some of you will remember that right before Christmas 2019, newborn preemie Elgin was found in the cold. We rushed him to LWB’s partner hospital in Hefei. Baby Elgin was admitted to the Neonatal ICU (NICU) weighing just 1.3 kgs, or 2.9 pounds. After spending over a month in the hospital at the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, Elgin reached the “magic weight” of 4 lbs and could leave the hospital at last.

Emergency Food Relief Update: Cambodia

Delivery of emergency food rations continues in Cambodia. Thanks to generous donations from our community, our team on the ground in Cambodia has been delivering critical supplies such as rice and fish oil to families who have lost their income during the pandemic. We’re also delivering soap to help prevent the virus. We wanted to share just a few of their stories with you to illustrate how these donations have helped us meet the immediate needs of families in the region we serve.
