Mickey’s Shy Smile: Worth the Wait!

In the interest of adoption, LWB Community will be profiling some waiting children whose orphanages have asked for help in finding families for them. However, we do want to be clear that these children are not in LWB programs, and we have no personal knowledge of them.

Some kids can’t get enough of the camera, hamming it up and grinning like movie stars. Mickey is not one of these kids! The woman taking these photos had a difficult time persuading him to face the camera. So she waited and waited to catch the moment he smiled. It looks like her patience paid off in these darling photos! Read more.

Our Virtual Volunteer Team

I get a lot of letters from people thanking me personally for the work LWB does, and they always make me uncomfortable. The reality is that LWB is a worldwide team of volunteers, and they are the ones who truly deserve the thanks. We couldn’t be the personal foundation we are without the over 175 dedicated people who follow the kids so closely.

It has been suggested that LWB would be an interesting business model to study since our individual programs are run entirely by volunteers, many of whom put in up to 40 hour weeks to make sure the children we help receive medical care, or specialized formula, or a chance at an education.

Timothy, Ready and Waiting!

This sweet smile belongs to Timothy, a young man who was in LWB’s Nutrition program in Deyang, Sichuan Province, in 2007.  Timothy received club foot casting through An Orphan’s Wish in Guilin, using the Ponseti method to gently move his feet into proper position. He arrived in August 2009 and was discharged nearly a year later in July 2010. Timothy also has a diagnosis of arthrogryposis. Currently he is six years old and wears an insole in his shoes. He no longer wears braces except for when he sleeps at night.

Elizabeth: LWB’s Featured Child of the Week

We would like to introduce you to Elizabeth, the youngest baby in our Deyang nutrition program. Yes, this cutie is a little girl even though she is wearing blue. Just two months old, Elizabeth weighs 12 pounds and is about 20 inches long. We say about 20 inches as she didn’t want to stretch out her legs for a more accurate measurement!

Elizabeth’s bright eyes and chubby cheeks are due in part to the high quality formula that she receives through our Deyang nutrition program. Every three months we ship formula to the orphanage, and one of our staff in China visits the orphanage to assess the children’s health and developmental progress.

Current donations to this program no longer bring in enough funds to cover the amount of formula we have been sending each quarter. In addition to babies like Elizabeth, toddlers with special needs at the Deyang orphanage also benefit from our formula.

Kaden: No Photos, Please!

Kaden is a very shy boy who lives in the Deyang orphanage in Sichuan Province who has just celebrated his third birthday. He really doesn’t like having his picture taken…can you tell? He entertains himself very well and is somewhat reticent around strangers….even strangers who come bearing food! From this gallery of photos that our China nutrition program director has taken of Kaden over the past year, you can really see how camera-shy he is. We did manage to capture one photo of him smiling as he plays in the water!

Time for My Weigh-In!

Micah has grown so big that he barely fits onto the scale for his monthly weigh-in! When you consider that he had purulent meningoencephalitis when he arrived at the Deyang orphanage in Sichuan province, it’s especially wonderful to see him looking so rosy and robust. Thanks to the good care and nutrition Micah has received there, this ten-month old is obviously flourishing. According to his nannies, he really enjoys his formula and, unlike some of the other babies, waits for it patiently with a big smile on his face. In fact, they say that Micah is a chubby, content and funny boy who loves to smile — just not when he’s involved with the serious business of being weighed!
