Terrific Tara!

In early 2012 LWB began a foster care program in Kaili, Guizhou Province. One of the first children we took into our program was a baby girl born with dwarfism, whom we named Tara.

Tara had the most devoted foster mom, who wore her in a traditional Guizhou baby carrier for much of the day. Our local manager always enjoyed visiting her home each month, as she was such a good-natured baby who quickly grew into a very determined toddler. She loved visiting the market with her foster mom, and no matter what the temperature her favorite thing in the world was to be outside. Read more.

2014 LWB Cleft Exchange – Tuesday

Tyrone smilingTuesday was another great day in Kaifeng.  Eight children received their surgeries, with one last minute substitution.   When it comes to cleft surgery, there are three important “tens.”   We want the kids to be 10 weeks old, weigh at least 10 pounds, and have a hemoglobin (iron level) of 10 as well.  All of the kids must have pre-op bloodwork done, and yesterday Tyrone’s came in low.  The doctors wanted to repeat it again today to make sure it was accurate, and unfortunately they discovered he is quite anemic.  He was already in his gown when the new numbers came in, and while we were disappointed he wouldn’t have surgery, he looks tickled pink, doesn’t he, that he got a last minute reprieve?  We are going to be running some more tests on him to see what could be going on, as his iron levels actually dropped even further from one day to the next. I saw his picture and thought he was adorable! Since we weren’t adopting again, I prayed for him and went on with my life. Read more.

Adorable Aiden

Aiden from Kaifeng, Henan Province, just turned eight. While he is a little shy, you wouldn’t guess it from his grin!   He’s currently a student in LWB’s Kaifeng Education program where he receives tutoring. Every day before class, he helps the teacher move the table and carry the chairs.  He also likes to help his fellow students. He helps pick up books off the ground, helps other children move their chairs and loves to help his fellow student, Grace, learn her numbers.
