Journey to Cambodia 2017: Hope in the Slums

About a quarter of the world’s population live in slums, officially defined as “squalid and overcrowded districts inhabited by people in poverty.”  In the region we recently visited in Cambodia, that definition was sadly accurate. We passed shanty after shanty built right along the railroad track, metal shacks thrown up by squatters, with dangling electrical lines I was told were illegally and dangerously spliced in. We came to this slum in Cambodia in search of a baby girl whom Leng, our LWB Cambodia Director, first met at a border crossing between Cambodia and Thailand. Leng had been extremely concerned to see how malnourished and sick the little girl was.

Aaron’s Journey

Since the early days of his life, Aaron has been in LWB care. Aaron’s life has been touched by a broad range of LWB programs — Medical, Healing Homes, Nutrition, Education, Foster Care and Advocacy — each one working together to benefit one special little boy.

In late April 2011, a darling boy started his journey in LWB’s hands. Born with a meningocele (spinal tumor), little Aaron was quickly moved to the hospital where he underwent a complex neurosurgery which also required the placement of a shunt. Read more.

Lilah: LWB’s Featured Child of the Week

We are so happy to be able to help support lovely Lilah in our foster care program in Lanzhou. Lilah is a ten year old girl who has hydrocephalus. She has lived with her foster family for awhile now and is very bonded to her foster parents and younger foster sister.

Aadorable Aaron

Aaron5 2014

Aaron turns four this month! He is one of the few children we know of who has been a part of each of LWB’s five program areas, and as a result we have quite a few photos and reports on this adorable boy. Since his adoption file is ready and with an agency, we thought it would be the perfect time to highlight Aaron through the years. Read more.

Xinzhou Baby Boom

It’s a baby boom in Xinzhou!

caleb

Our Xinzhou foster care program in Jiangxi province has just received four new baby girls! How exciting to see this program growing and taking more little ones into foster care.  These baby girls are so new that we only have one photo of each of them, and they haven’t yet learned to smile for the camera.  But don’t worry — we’re sure that we’ll be seeing smiles and open eyes from them soon enough. Guiyang Foster Care

When I first got actively involved with charity work in China, I kept hearing about a wonderful foster care program in Guiyang, Guizhou which was supposedly one of the largest foster care programs in that country.   Over the years, we were contacted by many foster families there who hoped LWB could  provide medical care, such as heart surgeries, to the children they were caring for.   We were always happy to help.  As those children were adopted, I would often hear from their new parents about how loved their children were in foster care.

This past April, we finally met in person with the heads of this program, a married Chinese couple who have been fostering children since 1999.

Colin, Growing Bigger and Better Each Day

Last August we ran a blog on Colin from our Sanmenxia foster care program.  This young man is still on the shared list waiting to be adopted. We thought our readers might enjoy seeing how much Colin has grown since our last report! His foster family says that he is an excellent eater and will eat just about anything, which is easy to believe by looking at his photos and seeing how much he has grown since the summer. Colin’s missing teeth must not be slowing him down!

Darling Dalton

Hi, I am Dalton and I’m three and a half years old!

I enjoy spending my days playing with toys, dancing, and singing. Going to school (at LWB’s Believe in Me — Jinjiang school) is also an important part of my day. At school I can introduce myself to others using my first and last name, and I get to exercise and play with other children.  I know my colors and am learning to follow directions well.
