In Honor of International Children’s Day

Around the world, International Children’s Day is celebrated on June 1. In China, Children’s Day, or Liù Yi Guójì Értóng Jié, honors the child. This day is celebrated with something special to most children — a day off of school! There are many performances and cultural activities celebrating the child on this day.

A Summer of Firsts for Jaime

Jaime, who is seven years old, experienced many firsts this summer. He made his first visit to a park and ate his first meal out at Kentucky Fried Chicken! We think it’s safe to guess from this photo that he especially enjoyed the toy that came with his meal. Jaime also had his first taste of performing on a stage during his Believe in Me school’s International Children’s Day Performance. Jaime and his friends didn’t seem to get stage fright and did a great job! Below is a short video of them rehearsing with their teachers in which Jaime can be seen stepping into the front at 1:37. Jo from Jingzhou

Even older girls love a field trip to the zoo! This photo of 15-year old Jo was taken during the Believe in Me — Jingzhou field trip to the zoo in March. Despite her epilepsy and severe seizures that sometimes disrupt her life, Jo is a very good student who works extremely hard. About a year ago, she had a medical setback and as a result has had to work extra hard to catch up academically. Her character writing is truly lovely. We really admire her perseverance and work ethic!

Jo is one of the children featured in our first annual “Sponsor a Child, Change a Life” program in honor of International Children’s Day. Just $20 a month would cover her school fees for Believe In Me so she can continue in this excellent education program. Please visit our website to learn more about her and other children just waiting for sponsors!

Sponsor a Child, Change a Life!

In honor of orphaned children in China and International Children’s Day, Love Without Boundaries is celebrating our first annual “Sponsor A Child” Day today!

In China and in many other countries, International Children’s Day (ICD) is celebrated on June 1.   The ICD had its origin in the World Conference for the Wellbeing of Children in Geneva, Switzerland in 1925.  It’s not clear why June 1 was chosen as the ICD.   One theory has it that the Chinese consul-general in San Francisco (USA) gathered a number of Chinese orphans to celebrate the Dragon Boat Festival in 1925, which happened to be on June 1 that year.  This also coincided with the conference in Geneva during which time the “Geneva Declaration Protecting Children” was passed.  The proclamation made a strong appeal for the spiritual needs of children, relief for children in poverty, prevention of child labor, reassessment of the way that children are educated and other issues related to the welfare of children around the world.
