Lianah: 5 Hearts, 7 Days

Lianah’s mom has never been out of Africa, or even Uganda, but she is ready with her brand-new passport.  The prospect of traveling outside her country is a frightening one, but Robinah is ready and willing. Her daughter, Lianah, has a very fragile heart.  She just turned one, but at 14.5 pounds, she simply is not gaining enough weight. Her breathing is heavy and labored. She’s in urgent need of surgery.

Preemie Stephen

On Christmas Eve, a tiny preemie baby was found in rural Anhui. Baby Stephen, as he came to be called, weighed a little more than two pounds and needed immediate intervention to remain alive.

Thankfully, his orphanage called us right away, and he was moved to the top children’s hospital in his home province where he began a fight for his life.

Christi and Our Emergency Medical Fund

In the early morning hours of a late July day, baby Christi was found. Born with some of her organs, including her liver and intestines, protruding through an opening in her abdomen (a condition called gastroschisis), the orphanage called LWB’s China staff immediately. Relying on LWB’s Emergency Medical Fund, Christi was rushed to the hospital where she received urgent surgery in the hope of saving this precious little girl’s life. Read more.

Chandler: LWB’s Featured Child of the Week

Five month old Chandler has made great progress recently at LWB’s Anhui Healing Home.  Meal time is one of her favorite parts of the day.  Hopefully, she likes alphabet soup, as her complex heart defect includes several acronyms! She was born with a complex heart defects including pulmonary atresia, ventricular septal defect (VSD), and patent ductus arteriosus (PDA). Read more

Hudson: A Success Story

Hudson smiled his way into our hearts in April 2010 when we were notified after he arrived at the orphanage very sick with pneumonia. He was hospitalized and treated for the pneumonia, but the doctors discovered he had a heart defect known as PDA (patent ductus arteriosus). Despite his illness, Hudson always had a beautiful smile on his face for the camera.
