Kinley: A Heart That Can’t Wait

For baby Kinley, every day matters. She is in a short window of time when a complicated heart surgery could save her life. If too much time passes, too many days go by without repairing her heart defect, she will most likely not survive.

Transposition of the Great Arteries: Baby Nina

Abandoned within the first two weeks of her life, Nina is a newborn with a very complex set of issues in her heart. Her orphanage noticed that she was suffering from breathing distress as well as malnutrition and dehydration, and they called to ask for our help. Once we move Nina to a nearby hospital for an evaluation, doctors discovered that she was born with a severe TGA heart defect. TGA stands for “Transposition of the Great Arteries” and is a rare and extremely serious condition in which the two arteries that leave the heart are reversed, or transposed. This condition can lead to low oxygen levels which in Nina’s case resulted in breathing distress.

Meet Heidi

Heidi-1

Last spring LWB was contacted by an orphanage in Jiangxi Province that had taken in a new baby with complex congenital heart disease. This little girl was born with Transposition of the Great Arteries (TGA), which occurs when the two main arteries going out of the heart—the pulmonary artery and the aorta—are switched in position. The orphanage was very concerned about the health of this baby girl, but thanks to our wonderful supporters she was able to be moved almost immediately to Shanghai for open heart surgery. Read more.

Help For Their Hearts

LWB’s Medical Program has many beautiful children with heart disease waiting for their chance at surgery right now. We wanted to profile three of the kids today, with the hope that their remaining funds needed can be raised for their treatment.  Please share with anyone you know who might want to give these precious children a true second chance.

Shelby came to our attention after an adoptive mom visited her orphanage and was told by the nannies that she wasn’t doing well due to her severe heart disease. Read more.

Levi: LWB’s Featured Child of the Week

Featured Child Levi

Levi was born with Complete Transposition of the Great Arteries (TGA) and came to us just days old and very blue. Very likely his parents abandoned him in the hope that he could receive the surgery he needs in order to survive. After being evaluated at Hefei Cardiac Hospital, the doctors felt his surgery needed to be done at about 20 days old for an optimal outcome. But then little Levi struggled to eat, and the doctors decided his surgery needed to be done immediately. The surgery lasted five hours, and Levi was stable when moved to the PICU for recovery. Levi is showing gradual improvement, but the next few days are very critical for him. You can be a part of Levi’s healing by making a donation in any amount. Read more.
