Morgan’s Eyes

Morgan is 3 ½ years old and is new to our foster care program in Guizhou. When our Foster care team saw Morgan’s photo, they felt that he was in need of urgent medical attention.

We were able to connect Morgan and his foster family with a wonderful eye hospital in Yunnan, and the chief surgeon asked them to travel to the hospital immediately.

Helping Impoverished Rural Families with Cleft Needs

Many rural, farming families seeking medical care for their cleft-affected children must travel long distances over difficult terrain.  The nearest hospital may be located many hours or even a day’s journey from their homes in the countryside, and most families travel by long-distance bus or trains to get their child medical help. Not only is travel difficult, but they must also arrange for time away from their fields and farms, or herds, or ask for time away from their jobs.

Kenna presurgery 5.16

Medical care in China must typically be paid for up front, and it can be difficult for families to learn that they don’t have adequate funds for the surgery their child needs after they have made such a long journey. Read more.

Unity In Action

Our Unity Initiative has seen a lot of action this past month! We thought now would be a good time to provide some updates on the families that we have committed to helping.

It’s now been two months since conjoined twins Harley and James had their separation surgery, and they are doing wonderfully.  Last week, their parents and grandmother brought them to the hospital in Shanghai for clubfoot repair.

Unity Initiative: Helping Families From Yunnan

LWB’s Unity Initiative has been in place for eight years now, with the hope of relieving the desperation felt by rural families who cannot afford medical care for their children.  Recently, more and more families in the far western province of Yunnan have learned about this program, and in the last few weeks alone, we have had eight families apply for help.

Dulce 3 4.13.16

This week, we learned about a young couple who are farmers near Zhaotong, a mountainous and remote town in northeastern Yunnan. It is a six hour bus ride from their rural home to the capitol city of Kunming, and they arrived this week hoping someone would be able to help their baby daughter, whom we are calling Dulce, to have the cleft surgery she needs. Suzy’s Song

Last fall we featured lovely twelve-year-old Suzy on our blog in Suzy: Look With the Heart. Suzy is part of our Zhaotong foster care program in Yunnan and attends a boarding school for the blind with her foster brother, who is also completely blind. She has just enjoyed spending the spring holiday home from boarding school with her foster grandmother, with whom she is very close. When her grandmother’s back aches from doing the household chores, Suzy is so kind to her and rubs her back to help her relax.  After meal times, she also tries to help her foster grandmother by straightening up the kitchen. She knows where all of the bowls and kitchen pans belong and can put them all away on her own.

We were so excited to receive these videos of Suzy this past week!  The first one shows her braille notebook and, more importantly, shows her singing like an angel. Suzy’s song begins at around 2:00 into the video, and we know you won’t want to miss hearing her sweet voice!

‘Twas the Night Before Christmas…

And laying his finger aside of his nose,
And giving a nod, up the chimney he rose;
He sprang to his sleigh, to his team gave a whistle;
And away they all flew like the down of a thistle.
But I heard him exclaim ‘ere he drove out of sight,
“Happy Christmas to all, and to all a good-night!” — Clement Clarke Moore

Joanne from Zhaotong Foster Care is showing Santa how it’s done as she puts her finger aside her adorable nose! We are thrilled to announce that she will be meeting her forever family in the new year.
