Tim’s Dream, Becoming a Reality
When LWB volunteers first met Tim back in 2006, he was just 14 years old. He and his sister lived at the Kaifeng Social Welfare Institute, and we all realized very quickly what an intelligent person he was, with a very kind heart.
As our involvement with this orphanage grew, Tim learned about Dr. Ness, the wonderful plastic surgeon who has gone on so many LWB cleft medical trips. A few years ago, he told us that Dr. Ness was his hero.
In 2011, we decided it was time for the two of them to meet in person, and so we invited Tim to come on our cleft medical exchange being held in Fujian province. He helped both pre-op and post-op with the children, and he got to see firsthand the great good that can be done by physicians who are committed to helping children in need.
At the time of that trip, Tim was going to a vocational college through LWB’s Education program to study dentistry, thanks to some wonderful LWB supporters. However, after taking part in the Fujian cleft trip he shared with us that his even bigger dream was to become a doctor himself, so that he could someday help orphaned children as well. All of us encouraged Tim to follow his heart, and this past June Tim sat for the entrance exam. We were overjoyed when he got his great results and then his acceptance letter to a medical college in his hometown.
Tim has now been in medical school for the past three weeks, and he is taking his studies very seriously. Every day he rides his bike to the university, arriving by 6 a.m.
We are so grateful to all of his sponsors who are allowing him the chance to really reach for his dreams. Your encouragement means so much to him. Hopefully in a few years one of our medical trips will be led by this remarkable young man!
